Cobo Bay from the fort at the 'Guet'

The Bailiwick of Guernsey (population approximately 61,000 English speaking) comprises a group of islands and islets forming part of the British Channel Islands, which are situated in the English Channel off the Northwest coast of France, located in the Bay of St Malo, approximately 90 miles from the UK and 20 miles from France.

Guernsey is reflected in the high standard of its shops, restaurants and excellent leisure facilities. The Island's prosperity over the last few years is also portrayed in its first class public facilities. These include a modern and well equipped hospital, multi-million pound leisure centre, brand new airport terminal, modern harbour facilities including yacht marinas.

The economy of the Island is broad based and encompasses banking and finance, tourism, horticulture, light industry, fishing and recently, conference business.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey comprises three separate legal jurisdictions: Guernsey (inc. Herm & Jethou) Capital: St. Peter Port, Alderney, Sark, Breqhou)

The Guernsey currency is the GBY £ & is linked with UK £ Sterling. The three jurisdictions in the Bailiwick of Guernsey are self-governing territories of the British Crown.

At no time since the Norman Conquest in 1066 has the evolution of the islands  constitutions involved amalgamation with, or subjection to, the government of the United Kingdom. The islands' link with the UK is through the English Sovereign, as latter day successor of the Dukes of Normandy.

The United Kingdom Government is responsible for the defense and international relations of the Bailiwick and the Crown is ultimately responsible for its good government. However, the people of Guernsey cannot vote in elections for the UK parliament and it would be unprecedented for the UK to legislate for Guernsey on taxation and other domestic matters without the agreement of the Guernsey authorities.

Legislation on taxation matters has always taken the form of laws enacted by the island legislature. The islands have a special relationship with the EU under which they are part of the Customs territory of the Community. However, other Community rules do not apply. Sales Tax - VAT does not apply in Guernsey.

Guernsey has a well-established financial services industry, which can loosely be divided into banks, insurance, investment and fiduciaries. The finance industry is serviced by a comprehensive infrastructure of accountants, lawyers and trust and estate practitioner.
